Manqoba Mngqithi would have preferred for Mamelodi Sundowns to be drawn against a team other than Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup when the season resumes. Per Phakaaathi
In this league, the KwaZulu-Natal side has established itself as giant killers, having knocked out top-flight sides like Kaizer Chiefs in the past.
The Masandawana coach does not want his team to be embarrassed by a lower division team, and to avoid that, he says he and his co-head coach Rhulani Mokwena, as well as senior coach Steve Komphela, would have to leave no stone unturned in their preparations for the match.
“We’re up against a highly competitive squad in Richards Bay, who did extremely well in the GladAfrica Champions this season… they’re up there.” It tells us they’re giant killers since they’ve done well against large teams in the past, and it’s critical that we treat this match with the respect it deserves,” Mngqithi explained.
“We have to work very hard to ensure that the team is ready for it, and I must say that we were a little unlucky with the draw, as we were drawn against a team that I believe will give us a tough time, but we believe we have the ability to upset any team. We’re optimistic that we’ll be able to achieve our goal,” he continued.
While Richards Bay remain atop the log, just ahead of JDR Stars on goal difference, the Sundowns technical team knows nothing about them and will have to rely heavily on the video analysis team to acquire a sense of the Natal Rich Boys’ style of play.
“They’re a closed book since we haven’t seen many of their games this season, but we know they’re a team that has a history of causing upsets, and they’re a Nedbank Cup squad with a lot of experience. They’ve done exceptionally well in that space over the years, and we must tread carefully to ensure that we deliver the results they require.”
