Rhulani Mokwena Shares His Thoughts On The Starts’ First Season.

Rulani Mokwena, the coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, believes their 60-game run in 2021 should serve as a reminder to their doubters about the size of their first-team roster.

Sundowns have 35 players signed up for the 2021/22 season, with Mokwena predicting that one or two more will arrive in the January transfer window, assisting the team in the second part of the season.

While he acknowledged that some of the younger players may be loaned out in order to receive regular first-team experience, he applauded the existing group for enduring the grueling fixture calendar in their record-breaking season.

“Everyone complains that Sundowns have too many players, but this is why you have too many players, aside from having played seven games in 19, 20 days.” “You also talk about the team that played the most games in a calendar year,” he told the press.

“We played 60 games in one year, which is equivalent to two league seasons.” When you consider how many minutes they played, it’s astounding. Mshishi has 1844 minutes of playing time, while AJ has 2042 minutes. Peter [Shalulile] has already played 2274 minutes this season, which is the most of any player’s average in a season, equating to two seasons in half a season.

“1175 minutes in Thapelo, 1995 minutes in Lyle, and 1656 minutes in Denis.” Then there are the incredible records of the team with the most clean sheets, with Peter scoring the most goals in a calendar year, and so on.

“So it’s been a challenging year for this team, but one that they’ve handled with grace, conviction, and integrity while preserving the club – and this is what we need to focus on and respect right now.”

At the halfway point of the season, Sundowns sit 14 points clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates in the DStv Premiership table, and they will compete in the CAF Champions League group stages next year.
