South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged to generate jobs and fight corruption by 2022.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Friday that his administration will focus its efforts in 2022 on creating jobs and combating hunger.
In his new year’s speech, he expressed worry for individuals without jobs following a second year of the Covid-19 pandemic, which was exacerbated by the economic damage caused by the July riots.
“Many breadwinners have lost their jobs, businesses have closed, and millions of families are struggling to put food on the table as a result of the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic,” Ramaphosa said.
“A number of critical foundations for our economic recovery were laid over the last year.” We implemented a number of economic reforms in order to boost investor confidence and support a long-term economic recovery. This year, we focused on promoting trade and investment on the African continent in order to reap the benefits of the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area.”
His administration plans to “build on the progress that has been made in ending state capture and fighting corruption” in the coming year. We will continue to fight corruption and successfully prosecute those who commit wrongdoing.”
