Orlando Pirates lead the chase for SuperSport’s rising star.

Orlando Pirates are leading the race to sign a talented young defender at SuperSport United. Personal terms reportedly agreed, what is next?

Orlando Pirates are leading the race to sign Kegan Johannes, a talented young defender from SuperSport United. The 23-year-old has impressed scouts with his versatility and skill. Going on to make over 60 appearances for United and representing South Africa’s under-23 team in the 2019 AFCON U23 tournament.

A TALENT WORTH FIGHTING FOR

Pirates are eager to strengthen their defence for next season. They see Johannes as a key addition. However, they faced stiff competition from Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. Both clubs were also interested in the rising star for next season.

ORLANDO PIRATES LEAD: TRANSFER SAGA UNFOLDS

In April, sources revealed that both Pirates and Chiefs were vying for Johannes’ signature, but United exercised their option to extend his contract by another two years.

“It’s not just Chiefs that’s interested but Pirates too are looking to make a move for Kegan(Johannes). His contract is ending at the end of the season but SuperSport has got an option to extend for another year. But there is talk of him making a move. With both teams showing good interest,” a inside source told The South African exclusively.

Despite this, negotiations between Pirates and Johannes have progressed, with “personal terms” agreed upon. The next step is for the clubs to communicate and agree on a transfer fee.

A RISING STAR IN THE MAKING

Johannes joined United in 2021 after leaving Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) on a free transfer. He has since become a valuable asset for the team. Featuring in the CAF Confederation Cup and scoring four goals in over 60 appearances.

THE FUTURE OF ORLANDO PIRATES’ DEFENCE?

The young defender recently underwent minor surgery for a recurring injury. But it is not expected to hinder the transfer process. Pirates are determined to secure Johannes’ signature and bolster their defence for the upcoming season.

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has responded to rumours that have suggested that defender Kegan Johannes will leave the club for Orlando Pirates next season.

“It’s people making up stories. I know nothing about it,” Hunt said on May the 11th.
