Mason Greenwood latest: Significant updates expected imminently

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will imminently find out if he will be facing rape charges.

Greenwood was arrested back in January of this year on suspicion of rape, assault, sexual assault and making threats to kill. He was later released on bail, where he has remained for the past couple of months, awaiting the outcome of Greater Manchester Police’s investigation into his alleged wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, Man United have suspended Greenwood, who is not even allowed to train with his teammates. It remains to be seen if he has any future at Old Trafford or in the game as a whole. That will likely depend on whether or not he is charged and later prosecuted for the offences that he is accused of.

As is reported by The Sun, the police involved in the case will be submitting their report to the Crown Prosecution Service within days, with Greenwood then likely to find out imminently whether he will be charged with rape and/or any of assault, sexual assault and making threats to kill.

Greenwood will be anxiously awaiting further developments in his case, while Man United will no doubt also have an eye on the situation. All parties will be keen for this to reach a definitive conclusion, even if it is one that is not particularly favourable from Greenwood’s own perspective.

Greenwood has not only potentially lost his Man United and England career as a consequence of the allegations made against him, but sponsors have also abandoned the youngster. His avenues for income have decreased considerably over the past few months, as you would perhaps have expected.

It remains to be seen if that can be rectified, should no charges be brought against him, but that is very much a bridge that we will cross once the CPS reveal what their decision is over the coming days.

As is calculated by metrics used on Transfermarkt, Greenwood’s market value plummeted from £45m to £0 after his arrest back in January. He was regarded as one of the most promising footballers on the planet, with Man United having lost an evidently valuable asset without being compensated whatsoever.

Of course, neither they nor Greenwood are the victims in this, but even an organisation of Man United’s size are not going to be able to write off an estimated £45m loss without a glum look on their face. That said, this is the club that spent £80m to bring Harry Maguire from Leicester City…
