Mamelodi Sundowns star’s future is uncertain. Leaving the club?

Mamelodi Sundowns defender and PSL Defender of the Year Grant Kekana’s future with the champions is not certain, as there is an impasse in his contract negotiations with the club.

Kekana’s current deal is running out at the end of the month, and there is no agreement with Sundowns on a new deal.

The player’s agent Steve Kapeluschnik negotiated a possible improved deal with Sundowns Sporting Director Flemming Berg, who initially offered Kekana a two year extension with an option, but his salary was to remain the same.

The offer was made just before the previous season ended. Kekana rejected the offer, asking for a three year extension and an improved salary. Sundowns Sporting Director Berg returned with a drastically changed offer last week, now offering Kekana a one year contract without an option and no salary increase on a take it or leave it basis.

It is understood that this has left Kekana fuming, and there is a good chance that he could leave Sundowns.

His business manager Kapeluschnik held a meeting with Berg to reconsider, but that was to no effect, and now Kekana is ready to walk out at Sundowns. Another round of talks are expected today afternoon with the hope that the impasse can be resolved.

The source further says Kekana is extremely unhappy with how his contribution is viewed by the powers that be at the club.

“This guy ( Flemming Berg) brought in South Americans who are earning a million a month, and the players you are talking about like Grant are contributing every week, but they cannot even make half what guys like Marcelo Allende and Matias Ezquivel are making. The guys feel it is unfair. And Kekana was not asking for a lot. He said, I have done well here, proved myself, played for Bafana, I am the defender of the season, show that you appreciate, but the Sporting Director is not bothered.

“This is the same thing that happened to Domingo and Zungu. The guys are not happy.,” said the source.

“Kaizer Chiefs is now an option if Sundowns does not come back with an improved offer. Kekana does not want to leave, but he knows Chiefs can offer better terms,” the source added.

The fact that Rhulani Mokwena has left the club is not making it easy for the club in these negotiations, especially since Kekana and Mokwena share an agent.
