Latest Updates On Bongani Zungu’s Transfer News
DStv Premiership clubs – as well as a few teams in Europe – will be on high alert following confirmation by midfielder Bongani Zungu that he is now officially a free agent.
The 29-year-old has spent the last five years on the books of French outfit Amiens SC having first joined them when they were in the topflight, but being relegated two years ago meant they were not able to hold on to their best players.
It is part of the reason why Zungu was loaned out to Rangers in the Scottish Premier League with an option for the side then coached by Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard to buy the Bafana Bafana midfielder outright.
Zungu returned to Amiens a title winner, but did not immediately play regular football due to issues with coach Phillipe Hinschberger that were later ironed out – in the end the former Mamelodi Sundowns talisman made a satisfactory 16 appearances in the French Ligue 2.
Rumours have been rife that Zungu would leave Amiens when his contract lapses at the end of next month, and recent comments made by the club’s sporting director, John Williams, suggested the midfielder was indeed on his way out.
“We’ve held talks with the club about a new contract, but my decision is that I will be leaving,” Zungu said when contacted by SABC Sport.
“I am a free agent now and my agent will be looking at my next move. Hopefully it will be another project that I can get excited about. We will know in the coming weeks, for now I can’t really discuss the options that are available.”
Kaizer Chiefs have in the past enquired about Zungu, as it is understands, but to date nothing has come of those informal conversations.
But the player can now sign for any club of his choice without a fee being paid to Amiens and this is expected to be one of the biggest transfer stories during the window. According to Mazola Molefe
