Kaizer Chiefs targeting three strikers?
Are these three reported striker targets the answer to Kaizer Chiefs’ chronic goal-scoring problems in the past few seasons?
Kaizer Chiefs have been linked with several strikers to solve their goal-scoring issues.
AMAKHOSI GOAL-SHY IN 2022-23
The Glamour Boys scored just 32 goals in 30 league outings last term. That’s not so glamorous. Sure, the strikers need to feed off quality chances and perhaps creativity has also been an issue, but the buck stops with the men up front. In addition, they conceded 33 times, making them the only side in the top six with a negative goal difference in 2022-23.
CAN THESE GUYS FIX THEIR PROBLEMS?
Chiefs were initially interested in 28-year-old Congolese star Walter Bwalya who plies his trade in Egypt. In November of 2023, according to SoccerLaduma, the Glamour Boys were keen on taking a closer look at Knowledge Musona’s younger brother, also Walter. He’s in Zimbabwe with PC Platinum but does have PSL experience after stints with Polokwane City and Sekhukhune.
AMAKHOSI UNDETERRED BY MAYO’S PRICE TAG
The most expensive option, however, will be Cape Town City’s star Khanyisa Mayo. The 25-year-old Bafana Bafana star is currently the joint-top goal scorer in the DStv Premiership with seven strikes. Last season, he jointly won the Golden Boot with 12 goals alongside Peter Shalulile. Mayo penned a new deal with the Citizens running through until 2028 but City chairman John Comitis insisted that City were not open to selling the player during the ongoing January transfer window. However, they might be more receptive to offers at the end of the 2023-24 campaign. Comitis says the Citizens will demand up to R37 Million for their star man.
Will the club sign any of these reported targets? The sounds coming from Bobby Motaung don’t sound promising after he said he’s happy with the current squad.
