Gabon scored after Ghana put the ball out of play after midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh went down injured. The Black Stars were furious.

After a 1-1 tie in the Africa Cup of Nations match between the two teams in Yaounde on Friday, Ghana captain Andre Ayew described Gabon as a “little squad.”

Ayew’s early score placed the four-time winners on course to win Group C for the first time, only for Allevinah to equalize in the 88th minute, putting Gabon on the verge of qualifying, but leaving Ghana’s prospects on a knife’s edge.

Gabon scored after Ghana put the ball out of play after midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh went down injured. The Black Stars were furious.

“They were a little team, but that’s how it goes with small teams,” Ayew explained.

“We took the ball out of play, and it’s only fair in football to return the ball.” They would not have scored if they had done so. They didn’t stand a chance in hell.”

At full-time, the referee summoned a Ghanaian back from the dressing room to brandish a red card after a pushing match broke out on the pitch.

Benjamin Tetteh looked to be the player in question, with television footage showing him punching Gabon’s Aaron Boupendza during the brawl.

Ghana now has just one point in Group C, while Gabon has four and Morocco, which qualified after defeating the Comoros 2-0 earlier in the day, is now set to proceed as one of the top two.

“We’ll take the pill and try to win the next game,” Ayew said. “Hopefully four points will be enough to get us through.”

Gabon’s performance was excellent, despite the absence of renowned scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and midfielder Mario Lemina.

The pair missed the team’s first game against the Comoros after testing positive for Covid-19, and they sat out this one after some residual from their infection was detected in their negative test on the eve of the game.

Can the black stars come back and make it through group stages against Cameroon?
