Overseas club enters race for Orlando Pirates target!

Orlando Pirates are facing even more competition to sign one of their transfer targets who is now available on a free transfer.

An Orlando Pirates target has become available on a free transfer, following the termination of his deal by Stellenbosch FC.

Pirates are believed to be hell bent on signing former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke.

Matsheke had just joined Stellenbosch as a free agent on a one-year deal, after he was released by Kaizer Chiefs. The midfielder starred for Amakhosi’s reserve side, before impressing enough to earn his senior debut under then coach Gavin Hunt. This during the 2020/21 season, a campaign the club ended up giving a few academy players an opportunity due to a FIFA transfer ban imposed on the club.

Matsheke had a promising start to life at Chiefs but quickly fell out of favour with Hunt, and was loaned out the next campaign. He never made it back to club. Stellies decided to offer him a short-term deal and he has since impressed at the Cape Winelands side. His performances even went as far as catching the eye of Pirates. It was rumoured that they were looking at signing the player. It seemed like it would be a straightforward deal to do then.

Last month, this publication reported that Pirates were looking to bid for Matsheke, even if he renews his Stellenbosch deal. That reported was then followed up by one claiming his deal could be terminated by the club. It was then confirmed by the Western Cape side that they have parted ways with the player. Now, according to iDiski Times, besides AmaZulu and Chippa United Indian Super League side Punjab are also interested.

“Indian Super League side Punjab have joined the race to sign former Kaizer Chiefs and Stellenbosch FC midfielder Darrel Matsheke. With Chilli Boys yet to seal the deal, Indian Super League side Punjab are monitoring the midfielder. They’re also looking to boost their squad.” Wrote the publication.

It remains to be seen if Matsheke ends up at Punjab, Pirates, AmaZulu or Chippa at the end of it all.
