AKA, a multi-award-winning South African artist, has stated that South African men require assistance because suicide rates are at “historic highs.” AKA said, “I’ve seen so many suicides in the last year that I’ve become desensitized to them and don’t feel anything anymore,” implying that he has become desensitized to them.
Following the loss of fellow rapper Riky Rick on Wednesday, the ‘Fela In Versace’ star, actual name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, made the somber admission.
On Wednesday, Riky Rick allegedly committed suicide at his estate home in Joburg’s northwestern suburbs. He had significant depression and had previously recorded a video in which he discussed his mental illness. Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado, the award-winning musician, was 34 years old.
AKA claimed that he and many other South African guys are suffering in silence following the suicide death of his mate Riky Rick. South African men are traumatized, according to the rap sensation, but they have no one to turn to for help.
AKA backed up his claim by revealing that men were responsible for 80% of the suicides he witnessed in the previous year.
“Let’s keep it 100. The last 5 people I know who took their own lives, 4 of them are men. I’ve seen so much suicide over the last year I can’t even feel anything anymore,” said AKA.
The musician also said that wealth does not make people immune from depression and other mental conditions. He highlighted that some of the people who have committed suicide are actually wealthy people, who people imagined to be living good lives.
“I’ve spoken to a lot of people, some of them said “He just got a bag from African Bank blah blah etc … “… that tells you everything you need to know about this f***ed up, fake ass algorithm world we have created for ourselves to live in. Riky went to Hilton, he grew up around money.”
He continued, “South African men are suffering from generational trauma and want assistance.”
“I hope that very soon we can address the issue of how damaged and broken the men in this country are. We have no one to talk to, we just pat each other on the back and say, “get on with it, be strong my boi”… but in reality, we are traumatised. Generational trauma passed down to us.”
